Reserve Police Officer Program

This is a volunteer program and all Reserves must be prepared to supply all of their own equipment and uniforms.

The purpose of this policy is to generally describe the duties of a Reserve Officer.

  1. A Reserve Officer is a person authorized by a city, city and county, town, or county within this state to act as a reserve police officer, reserve deputy sheriff, or reserve town marshal for certain specific and limited period of time while the person is authorized to be on duty and acting at the express direction or under the direct supervision of a P.O.S.T. certified peace officer pursuant to Colorado Revised Statutes. A Reserve Officer is responsible for carrying out the basic function of the department, namely the preservation of the public peace, protection of life and property, the prevention of crime, and proper enforcement of the laws. The Police Department is a semi—military organization and each officer will be held to a high standard of performance within that structure.

  2. In order to maintain membership in the Reserve Officer program, officers are also required to complete all required recruit and applicable in-service training, maintain all required department certifications (i.e. CPR training), attend all scheduled Reserve Officer meetings and training activities, and contribute a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer service per month to the Lochbuie Police Department.

  1. The Reserve Officer will serve in a support function to a variety of police services. Examples of duties shall include but are not limited to:
  • Solo patrol duty and assignment to routine calls (as authorized by the Chief of Police).
  • Serve in a backup role as the second officer in a patrol vehicle, along with a commissioned police officer.
  • Planning, directing, and participating in traffic control for parades, festivals, and other community events.
  • Surveillance/stake-out duty for investigations.
  • Crime scene security and prisoner security at hospitals.
  • Prisoner transports to local county jails.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Be POST Certified or attending an academy
  • Possess a valid Driver's License
